Engineering microbes

to solve the biggest challenges in agriculture

Joyn Bio is a joint venture between Ginkgo Bioworks and Leaps by Bayer, founded to bring synthetic biology to address challenges facing agriculture and our global society. Our aim is to lift the performance of biological solutions for agriculture to a level where they truly compete with their chemical counterparts. To do this we are developing a platform of microbial agricultural solutions that address crop fertility and crop protection. The first project is to engineer microbes that can provide cereal crops such as corn, wheat, or rice with biological nitrogen fertilizer, substantially decreasing the environmental impact of agriculture.
